So you’re looking at building a concrete sleeper retaining wall but can’t decide what concrete sleeper to choose. One of the first things you’ll notice is there are a whole range of concrete sleepers with varying colours and textures. Once you choose one of these styles, you’ll have the option of choosing between a sealed or unsealed sleeper. So what is a sealed sleeper, and what does it mean regarding your concrete sleeper wall?

What is a sealed concrete sleeper? Basically, the concrete mixture used to pour the textured sleepers has a colouring agent added to it to change the colour of the concrete. This sleeper then comes out the desired colour, let’s say charcoal.

This sleeper will then have a sealant applied to the front face (the side you will see). This will in turn darken the colour of the sleeper and preserve the sleeper from discolouring. (see blog on sleeper discolouration for more details on how sleeper discolouration occurs),

To conclude, there is no one size fits all in regard to sealed vs unsealed concrete sleeper. A sealed concrete sleeper provides a great option for walls that are going to be highly visible, as they won’t discolour over time, and they look fantastic. However, they are $3-8 more each than their unsealed counterparts. Unsealed concrete sleepers are great to add texture to your concrete sleeper wall without jumping too much in cost.
